How to submit a paper to Revista IDeAS?

The submission of manuscripts for evaluation must be done through the journal's system after completing the registration. The filling in of the data of the authorship of the article or review must be as complete as possible, always including institutional link, city and biography. Keywords, summary and references of the submission must also be filled in correctly. The text file for evaluation must be attached to the submission system – see formatting rules below. An automatic notification is sent by the system when a manuscript is submitted to the journal. This notification is sent to the author's email and serves as proof of submission.

Redundant publications by the same author will not be considered. In the case of multiple submissions of the same authorship, more than one article will not be evaluated simultaneously, being considered only the oldest submission.

Authors may previously refuse peers so that editors do not take them into account in the selection – for possible conflict of interest, for example. A note can be added to the submission.

We also encourage authors and co-authors to register in advance on the ORCID platform so that they can provide their ORCID link  in their profiles on our portal in order to collaborate with the efforts to unify the attribution of scientific authorship. At the same time, we suggest to Brazilian researchers the connection of ORCID to the Lattes Platform.

Which types of papers can be submitted?

IDeAS receives original articles and reviews, obeying the publication rules below.

1. Revista IDeAS accepts articles of a theoretical character and/or research results and reviews of relevant and recent books, reserving the right to publish or not the material spontaneously sent to the editorial staff. Reviews must be about publication made in up to 5 years, counted retroactively from the date of sending the text.

2. Revista IDeAS prioritizes the publication of articles and reviews produced by students of stricto sensu postgraduate courses or recently graduated. Contributions that do not fit in this situation will be published respecting a maximum limit of fifty percent of the total articles published in each issue. This rule does not apply in the case of co-authors, who may have any degree, whether or not they are graduate students.

Formal aspects of the manuscript

• File format. Must be presented in the doc / docx extensions.
• Language. The main text can be in Portuguese, Spanish or English.
• Text. Papers must be written in Times New Roman, size 12, 1.5 spacing and justified.
Total size. Articles must not exceed the limit of 30 pages. In this calculation, references and tables will be considered, as well as the abstract and keywords. Reviews must have a maximum of 5 pages.
• Title. It must be accompanied by an English version written below the original title. It must be synthetic and representative of the study, not being too generic. It must not be presented in capital letters (capital letters). Title and abstract serve to attract readers' attention to the article. Therefore, the more evident, defined and well related to the content of the manuscript, the greater the chances of success in this task. In addition, well-structured, informative and reflective abstracts and titles are key points for proper journal indexing. The title has a significant impact on the attention that the article attracts and, for this reason, it must be informative and succinct. It can be designed in a variety of ways, as long as it attracts the target audience efficiently. For that, it must be based on fundamental information about the work, such as: theme, studied population, analyzed variables, employed methods and/or the main conclusion. It is up to authors to define which of these items are most relevant to attract the reader's attention. In general, the explanation of the conclusion in the title is usually more attractive.
• Abstract. It must be written in simple space, in the same language as the text, with up to 150 words and an English version or Portuguese abstract (resumo) for English texts. The abstract should provide an overview of the work, using concise language. The abstract is a miniature of the study and, therefore, must describe objectives, the procedure used to fulfill them, results directly related to the objectives and, finally, conclusions of the research. Considering the abstract's limited and synthetic nature, only the fundamental questions of the methods and the main interpretations of the results - which support the conclusions - should be mentioned. The abstract should be suitable both for people who will read the full text and for those who will not.
• Key words. At least five keywords in the work language and in English (accompanying the abstract) or Portuguese keywords for English texts. They must also be incorporated during the submission process in the corresponding metadata fields. Avoid repeating terms already used in the title and in the abstract to expand the scope of searches for work. To formulate a good set of keywords, think about how colleagues will retrieve the article, what search terms will be used for that. The terms must be associated with the main concepts of the article, and synonyms or variants of the fundamental terms can also be used. They must be as specific as possible, avoiding too general terms. It may be useful to review the keywords in the publications that are used as a reference.
Identification. Due to the double-blind review, the files must not contain the name of the author, as well as institutional references and affiliations. All of these data must be entered completely in the system's registry (step 3 of submission) or, exceptionally, in the body of the text of the electronic messages. See the topic below Ensuring double-blind peer review.
Citations. In the body of the text, the indication of reference in direct citations must include authorship, year of publication and page (s); in indirect citations the page indication is optional.
• Notes. They must be brief and come at the bottom of the page. Make use of this resource as little as possible.
Financing source. The reference should be located at the end of the document, after the conclusions. If the results presented have been obtained through a project financed with public, private or mixed funds, the complete reference to the project must be expressly indicated: name, official project identifier and funding entity. If there is more than one financing entity, these data will be filled in for each one.
Acknowledgment. They must be inserted after the sources of funding (if any) or the conclusions.
Graphs, tables and figures. Tables and figures must be properly enumerated and inserted within the body of the text. However, the figures must also be sent as a separate file, with high quality and in jpg or png format (preferably png).
Acronyms and abbreviations. When they are first quoted, they must be presented in full with their meanings. Foreign language words must be in italics.

Co-authorship criteria

All authors must be registered at the time of submission, this being the responsibility of the person making the submission.
Manuscripts with five or more authors must detail the contributions in the field “Comments to the editor” according to the example and terms and definitions listed below.
All listed authors must have contributed significantly to the research and are required to provide retractions or corrections of errors when detected. It is essential, therefore, that each author participated directly in the writing of the text and approved the submitted version.
Each person listed in the authorship must review the successive versions of the text and approve the final version, assuming ethical and academic co-responsibility for the completeness of its content.
People who contributed to the work, but do not meet the criteria of authorship should be mentioned in the Acknowledgments (included in the version for publication after the topic Conclusion).
The corresponding author or author is responsible for ensuring that the descriptions and information are accurate and agreed upon by all authors.

Articles with five or more authors. The contributions of all authors must be listed as an example, using the terms and definitions listed below. Authors may have contributed in various roles or contributions.

Ensuring double-blind peer review

To ensure the integrity of blind peer review, for submissions to the journal, every possible care must be taken not to reveal the identity of authors and reviewers among them during the process. This requires that authors, editors and reviewers (who may submit documents to the system as part of the evaluation process) take some precautions with the text and properties of the document:

- The authors of the document excluded names from the text, replacing "Author" and the year in references and footnotes, instead of authors' names, article title, etc.

- In Microsoft Office documents, the author identification must be removed from the document's properties (in the File> Properties menu), starting with File, in the main menu, and clicking on the sequence: File> Save as ...> Tools (or Mac Options)> Security Options ...> Remove personal information from file when saving> OK> Save.

- In PDFs, the names of the authors must also be removed from the Document Properties, under File in the Adobe Acrobat main menu.

Expected Content

The IDeAS requires submissions to the journal to be original works. An original article is not only solely based on a bibliographical review or a summary of previous publications about the research subject. More than presenting existing knowledge in a new format, an original work seeks to fill a gap in the research field in question.

An article is considered an original or unpublished contribution when the author(s) of research or experience describe their hypothesis and the purpose of the work, detail their research methods, report its results, interpret, and discuss the possible implications of it.

Articles about research results. An original article can be based on a data survey, which commonly involves the direct or indirect observation of the researched subject, whether in the laboratory, on the field, or several other primary sources, such as documents. The work should describe the methodology (pointing out the data sources and the forms of analysis), the results and the conclusions, or offer a new interpretation of the previous results or data.

New results or new approaches of an existing question are usually produced in an original work of analytical nature. In some subjects that experimentation is not needed or done, the degree of originality lies in the particular approach that the existing comprehension of the subject is transformed or reinterpreted based on the results of the research.

Theoretical articles. It should offer more than a summary of the state of the art of a given subject. The development of the work must offer a new critical perspective and a personal elaboration in the discussion of the problem addressed, pointing out new elements of theoretical discussion.

Recommended Article Structure

Articles about research results. The macrostructure of original articles that are research results commonly uses IMRAD (Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion) model, with possible subdivisions and adaptations for different types of works.

- Introduction. It should present the main subject of the work and place it in the research field. Clarify all the knowledge about the subject and the main gaps addressed. Present research objectives, motivation, and what conducted and supported the study proposal. The introduction should be informative, concise, and should arouse curiosity and encourage further reading. What questions does the article intend to answer?

- Methodology. All the procedures involved in carrying out the research should be detailed to ensure that the reader can correctly interpret the results. How was the data that support the study obtained? Was it produced data and/or reworked by the author(s)? Is the data obtained from other works? How was it analyzed? The methodology should be detailed, but only the methodologies that are currently used to support the work’s results and conclusions should be described.

Analysis parameters and key concepts should be presented properly.

If the article used population data (i.e. families, agriculturists, municipalities), characterize them properly and clarify how the research records were carried out. If the analysis used computer programs, clarify the tools used.

In the case of conducting interviews, the type of interview, registration, and the way of conducting it should be described.

Characterize the geographic space/territory/region in which the study was conducted.

- Results. The results should be directly and strictly associated with the objectives of work. Extra analysis, whose purpose is not evident, could confuse readers. For this reason, when describing the results it is always important to keep the research questions and objectives in mind. If there are many results and/or objectives to be explored, it is recommended to divide the section into topics to better understanding.

Try to choose the most proper way to describe the results, in other words, the format that summarizes and highlights the main findings of the study. In general, we chose to use illustrations (i.e. tables, charts, graphs) whenever they facilitate the understanding of the results. Tables are particularly useful for presenting values referring to a series of variables/categories that would be repetitive if they were described in a text.

When the intent is to highlight a specific finding, it is more appropriate to choose graphs, which present information more quickly and clearly. Invariably, the information presented in any type of illustration should be complementary to that mentioned in the text, but should not repeat them, since duplicity would eliminate the function of these visual aids.

The results analyzed statistically should preferably contain all relevant statistics.

- Discussion. Resume the main findings of the study and discuss how the knowledge generated by the results contribute to the current scientific context. Relate this information to the pertinent literature and conclude mentioning the implications for the research field. It is important to maintain always coherent the link between the objectives and the argument.

It is important that the author(s) take a stand at the time of the discussion, not just simply resume the results and make comparisons to other works. Contextualize in the light of the actual literature, clarifying how the findings of the study fill the gaps of the research field.

It is recommended to make all the limitations of the study clear and to suggest future perspectives. It is desirable to briefly explicit the type and the objectives of the researches suggested, as it is from this point that other studies will be developed.

- Conclusions or final considerations. Author(s) should finalize the manuscript by choosing a model for the conclusion or final considerations.

Theoretical articles. For theoretical articles, we recommend the Introduction, Development, and Conclusions structure.

- Introduction. It should explain the purpose and justification of the work. All the theses should be presented in a correct, evident, and well-founded manner, in addition to establishing a relationship between ideas and previous works on the same issue.

- Development. It can be divided into different topics. Consistency and systematization should be demonstrated in the development of the discussion and the relationships between the different arguments presented. Also, opposing theses and results of empirical works that support such theses must be exposed to arouse criticism, reflection, and discussion.

- Conclusions. The conclusions must be linked to the arguments presented and explain the original contributions to the problems presented.
