Esta obra trata de um tema bastante caro a diversas áreas do conhecimento, como a geografia e a sociologia rural: as diferentes apropriações da categoria espaço (ou “terra”) no pensamento social brasileiro no decorrer da Primeira República; mais especificamente em Vicente Licínio Cardoso e Euclides da Cunha. Sendo seu autor de formação no campo da sociologia, é de grande interesse aproximar sua análise das reflexões desenvolvidas por geógrafos sobre esse mesmo assunto, estabelecendo assim um diálogo que possibilite um refinamento teórico e um aprofundamento analítico enriquecedor para esse tipo de discussão. É nesse sentido que esse trabalho pretende contribuir.
