The production of militant engagement: the experience of Instituto Educar (MST)

The article investigates how the educational experience in the Agronomy college of the Landless Workers Movement, in Pontão/RS, shapes students’ activist engagement with the Movement and its agendas. The study is based on an analysis of students’ life trajectories, fundamental for the formation of their dispositions and identities, and examines the dynamics experienced in the institution’s daily life. It also seeks to understand to what extent the Movement's interpretative frames are incorporated by the students and how the college mobilizes these frames to form militants. This qualitative study combines literature review, participant observation and semi-structured interviews with three students to understand the social dynamics within the college and the individual trajectories of the students. The research shows that Instituto Educar fosters an environment in which acts mechanisms of militant socializations, structural connection, and identity alignment operate, which tend to build or reinforce dispositions and resources for activist engagement.
